# Shelf Space Rules That Keep a Pottery Studio Tidy

Shelf space is the second thing studios run out of, after kiln space. Pieces pile up, shelves fill with half-finished work and one member's boxes take over the corner. A short policy, shared on day one, prevents most of it.

## Decide what you offer

* **Included shelf.** Every member gets a fixed amount of space in their membership.
* **Rented shelf or cubby.** Extra space for a monthly fee.
* **Lockers.** For tools and personal supplies.
* **Shared drying racks.** For short-term use only.

Say how much space each option includes, measured in a way members can see, such as "one 60 cm board" or "one cubby".

## Set limits and time limits

* A maximum size per member.
* A maximum time for unfinished pieces, for example 60 days without activity.
* A time limit for finished work waiting for pickup. See [what to do with unclaimed pottery](/blog/unclaimed-pottery-policy/).
* No storage of raw materials or equipment unless agreed.

Time limits matter more than size limits. Most overflow comes from forgotten work, not from active projects.

## Shelf space policy template

Copy this and edit it.

| Topic | Policy |
| --- | --- |
| Space included | One shelf board per member. |
| Extra space | Available to rent monthly, subject to availability. |
| Labeling | Every piece has the member's name and a date. |
| Unfinished work | Must be worked on every 60 days or removed. |
| Finished work | Collect within 30 days of the last firing. |
| Overflow | Items outside your space may be moved to the overflow shelf. |
| Reminders | We send two reminders before moving or disposing of pieces. |
| Exceptions | Ask staff in advance. |

Post the policy at the shelves and in your onboarding. See [member onboarding](/blog/pottery-studio-member-onboarding/).

## Make it visible

* Label each shelf with the member and the date of the last audit.
* Photograph shelves monthly. A quick photo is the best evidence when someone disputes what was there.
* Keep a "moved items" shelf for anything you relocate.

## Enforce kindly

* Send a friendly message first.
* Explain the rule and the deadline.
* Offer help, such as a bag to take pieces home.
* Follow through, or the policy means nothing.
