Pottery Clay Shrinkage: How to Calculate Your Final Dimensions
Clay gets smaller as it dries and fires. That is normal. What is not normal is being surprised when a "12 cm" wet lid no longer fits the jar.

What shrinkage means
Shrinkage is the reduction in size as water leaves the clay and as particles fuse in the kiln. Potters usually quote linear shrinkage: how much a length (height, diameter, width) changes from wet to fired.
If a clay lists 12% shrinkage, a wet line that is 10 cm long finishes around 8.8 cm fired.
Volume shrinks more than length. At 12% linear shrinkage, volume drops by roughly one third. That is why a piece can feel much lighter and tighter after firing even when the diameter change looks modest.
Where shrinkage happens
Clay shrinks in stages:
- Plastic to leather hard: some shrinkage as water leaves
- Leather hard to bone dry: more drying shrinkage
- Bisque and glaze firing: sintering and vitrification pull particles closer
Bag labels often give total wet-to-fired linear shrinkage as a single percentage. That number is a starting point, not a law of physics for every studio schedule.

Typical ranges by clay type
Exact numbers live on the bag. Broad patterns:

Groggy bodies often shrink a bit less than fine porcelain. Different brands in the same category can disagree by a few points. Measure your own tests when fit matters.

The two calculations you need
Wet to fired (prediction)
Fired size ≈ wet size × (1 − shrinkage rate)
Example: 12% shrinkage, 11 cm wet diameter → 11 × 0.88 = 9.68 cm fired.
Fired to wet (working backward)
Wet size ≈ fired size ÷ (1 − shrinkage rate)
Example: you want a 10 cm finished diameter at 12% → 10 ÷ 0.88 ≈ 11.36 cm wet.

How to find your real shrinkage rate
Bag rates assume a standard process. Your studio's drying and firing can differ.
A simple test:
- Roll or throw a flat test tile or ring
- Measure a marked length while wet (or freshly thrown)
- Dry fully to bone dry, then bisque and glaze fire as you normally would
- Measure the same mark after the final firing
- Shrinkage % ≈ (wet − fired) ÷ wet × 100
Do this once per clay body you use seriously. Update the number if you change clay brands or firing schedules.
Fit problems shrinkage solves
Lids. Gallery and flange must shrink together. Same clay body helps. Calculated wet sizes help more.
Nesting bowls. Diameters need a planned gap after shrinkage, not only while wet.
Sets. Matching mug heights look intentional when you planned finished size, not only wet height.
Commissions. "Finished height 20 cm" means you throw taller than 20 cm by the right percentage.

Common shrinkage mistakes
Using one percentage for every clay in the studio. Labels differ. Reclaim mixes differ more.
Measuring soft, squishy clay carelessly. Take clean marks on a true wet or leather-hard reference you can repeat.
Ignoring differential drying. Thick bases and thin rims stress and warp, which looks like "random" size change.
Forgetting glaze fit is separate. Shrinkage of the body and expansion of the glaze are related topics but not the same calculation. Crazing and shivering need glaze chemistry and fit tests.

- Pick one clay body and write down its bag shrinkage
- Decide a finished mug diameter you like
- Work backward to a wet diameter in the calculator
