Why Pottery Cracks (and How to Prevent It)

Pottery cracks when one part of the clay shrinks, dries, or heats faster than the part next to it. That is the whole mystery, dressed up as heartbreak.

Most beginner cracks are not "bad clay." They are thickness, timing, joins, or speed. This guide names the usual cracks, what caused them, and what to change next time.

The rule behind almost every crack

Clay shrinks as water leaves. Later, it shrinks again in the kiln.

If the rim, wall, floor, handle, and joins all move together, the pot survives. If one area is thicker, wetter, or more restrained than another, stress has to go somewhere. It goes into a split.

Preventing cracks means:

  • Even thickness
  • Compressed floors
  • Strong joins at the same moisture level
  • Slow, even drying
  • Bone-dry pots before bisque
  • Sensible kiln ramps, especially through quartz inversion

S-cracks in the base

An S-crack is a curved split in the floor, often visible after drying or bisque. It is the classic "my bowl looked fine yesterday" crack.

Usual causes:

  • A thick, uncompressed floor
  • Clay that was opened but never pressed back together
  • Fast drying while the base stayed wet
  • Trimming that left a thin skin over a wet core

Prevention:

  1. Compress the floor with your fingers or a rib after opening
  2. Check thickness with a needle. The base should not be a puddle of extra clay
  3. Dry slowly, especially bowls and plates
  4. Flip pieces when you can so the foot and rim dry together

Rim splits and wall cracks while drying

These show up as lines at the lip, or splits where a thick lower wall meets a thin upper wall.

Usual causes:

  • Uneven walls
  • Drying next to a vent, sunny window, or kiln that is on
  • Uncovering a wet pot in a dry room all at once
  • Adding water to one spot on almost-dry clay

Prevention:

  • Dry under loose plastic first, then uncover gradually
  • Keep pots out of drafts
  • Tent handles and thick rims so they do not race
  • Never "rescue" bone-dry clay with a wet sponge on one area

Handle cracks and popped-off coils

A crack at a join is usually an attachment problem, not a glaze problem.

Usual causes:

  • Weak score and slip
  • Handle softer or drier than the mug body
  • Sharp corners at the join instead of a blended fillet
  • Handle drying faster than the wall

Prevention:

  • Attach at leather hard, with both pieces at the same stage
  • Score both surfaces, add slip, press, then blend
  • Support the handle so it does not droop and pull the join
  • Wrap the whole mug so the handle cannot desert the body

Cracks from trimming

Trimming does not create every crack, but it can reveal one, or finish the job.

Usual causes:

  • Trimming while too wet (smear, then a weak skin)
  • Trimming while too dry (chatter, chips, stress)
  • Cutting the floor too thin after a wet core hid inside

Cracks in the kiln

Some pots survive drying and still fail in fire. That is different physics, same lesson: uneven stress.

Not dry enough. Steam wants out. A still-damp pot can blow or split in bisque. Wait until it is truly bone dry. Why Bone Dry Matters is not optional reading.

Thermal shock. Fast climbs or cool-downs around quartz inversion (near 573°C / 1063°F) can crack pots, especially thick pieces and porcelain. Candle (slow preheat) on bisque loads. Do not yank shelves while work is still screaming hot.

Thickness again. A fat foot and a thin wall do not heat the same way.

A quick diagnosis chart

Crack in the floor, S-shaped. Compress next time. Thin the base. Dry slower.

Crack at the rim. Uneven walls or a dry room. Wrap earlier.

Crack at a handle or coil. Score, slip, match moisture, blend, tent.

Crack after bisque, pot felt cool before loading. It was not dry. Wait longer.

Crack after a fast glaze firing or early unload. Heat and cool more gently. Ask the studio about schedule, not luck.

What you can fix, and what you cannot

Before bone dry, a hairline in plastic or early leather-hard clay can sometimes be scored, slipped, and blended if the clay is still unified. After bone dry, water on a crack usually makes it worse.

The kiln does not heal cracks. It reports them.

Habits that prevent most cracks

You do not need a new clay body on week two. You need a few boring habits.

  • Wedge well
  • Weigh balls so thickness stays comparable
  • Compress floors
  • Join like you mean it
  • Dry slower than your impatience wants
  • Name the stage before you pick up a tool (Pottery Clay Stages)
  • Write down which forms crack, and in which spot
