Compress the rim on three cylinders
An uncompressed rim cracks. A well-compressed rim is smooth, rounded, and satisfying to touch.
The drill
Throw three short cylinders (200 g each). On each one, practice compressing the lip:
- Use a damp chamois or your finger and thumb
- Fold the rim clay slightly inward as you compress
- The wheel should be spinning at moderate speed
What you're looking for
- Smooth, rounded rim with no sharp edges
- No thin spots or tears
- The rim should feel pleasant to run your finger over: this is where someone's lips will touch if it's a mug
Three pots, three chances to nail it. The third should feel natural.
