Full sgraffito panel on a vase
A full sgraffito panel is an investment: plan it before you scratch.
Preparation
- Coat a leather-hard vase or tall cylinder with contrasting slip
- Plan the design on paper first: sketch it at scale
- Transfer key reference lines to the pot (light pencil marks burn away in firing)
Execution
- Vary your line width using different tools (pin for fine lines, loop for wide strokes)
- Work in sections, completing each before moving on
- Keep raking light on the piece at all times
- If the slip starts drying past the sweet spot, prioritize finishing one area well
The bar is high
- Detailed coverage across most of the surface
- Multiple line widths creating visual hierarchy
- A design that tells a story or creates a mood
- Clean execution throughout
This is portfolio-level work. Take your time.
