Surface Decoration (Pre-Bisque) · Sgraffito: Scratching Through Slip

Stretch

Full sgraffito panel on a vase

A full sgraffito panel is an investment: plan it before you scratch.

Preparation

  1. Coat a leather-hard vase or tall cylinder with contrasting slip
  2. Plan the design on paper first: sketch it at scale
  3. Transfer key reference lines to the pot (light pencil marks burn away in firing)

Execution

  • Vary your line width using different tools (pin for fine lines, loop for wide strokes)
  • Work in sections, completing each before moving on
  • Keep raking light on the piece at all times
  • If the slip starts drying past the sweet spot, prioritize finishing one area well

The bar is high

  • Detailed coverage across most of the surface
  • Multiple line widths creating visual hierarchy
  • A design that tells a story or creates a mood
  • Clean execution throughout

This is portfolio-level work. Take your time.
