Handbuilding Basics · The Pinch Pot Method

Hard

Join two pinch pots into a hollow sphere

This is where pinch pots become sculpture.

Make two matching pinch pots with rims that are the same diameter. Then:

  1. Score both rims with a fork or needle tool
  2. Apply slip (liquid clay) to both scored surfaces
  3. Press them together firmly
  4. Smooth and blend the seam until invisible
  5. Poke a tiny needle hole somewhere for air escape (or it may crack in firing)

Success criteria

  • Seam is invisible after smoothing
  • Form feels like one piece, not two halves
  • Sphere is roughly symmetrical
  • No cracks at the join after 24 hours of drying
