Layer multiple underglaze colors
Colors interact. Layering reveals things you can't predict until you test.
The experiment
Create a design using three or more underglaze colors on a tile or pot:
- Apply one color, let it dry completely
- Apply the second color, overlapping in some areas
- Apply the third, overlapping differently
What to observe after firing
- Do overlapping areas create new colors?
- Does the order of application matter?
- Do some colors dominate others?
- Are there any unwanted reactions (crawling, bleeding)?
Document everything
Label your test tiles: "blue over red," "red over blue," etc. These become your permanent reference library.
Every potter's test tile collection is their most valuable possession.
