Make a set of test tiles

Test tiles are the most underappreciated tool in ceramics. A good set of blanks means you can test anything without risking a real piece.

Make 12 identical tiles

1. Roll a slab about 6 mm thick
2. Cut tiles roughly 5×8 cm each
3. Poke a hole in the top (for hanging on a display board later)
4. Half the tiles: stamp, carve, or press texture into the surface
5. Other half: leave smooth

Why texture on some?

Glazes behave differently on textured vs. smooth surfaces. A glaze that's boring on flat clay might be stunning pooling into carved lines.

Bisque fire all 12

Now you have a permanent supply of testing blanks. Whenever you mix a new glaze, get a new colorant, or want to try a technique, grab a tile.

Pro tip

Make 12 at a time. You'll use them faster than you think. Potters who test obsessively make better work than potters who guess.
