Mishima pattern on a plate rim

Apply mishima to a functional piece: the rim of a plate where it will be seen and admired at every meal.

The task

1. Throw a plate and let it reach leather hard
2. Carve a repeating pattern around the rim (geometric, floral, or abstract)
3. Inlay with contrasting slip
4. Scrape clean

Quality markers

• Pattern repeats evenly around the full circumference
• Lines are sharp-edged and fully filled
• No excess slip left on the surface
• The color contrast reads clearly

Unlike the inside of a mug, a plate rim is always on display. This piece should be precise enough to be proud of at the dinner table.
