Throw a bottle with a narrow neck

A bottle is one of the most elegant wheel-thrown forms. Wide belly, narrow neck, graceful transition.

From 600 g, throw a bottle form:

Specifications

  • Wide belly (12–14 cm diameter)
  • Narrow neck (3–4 cm opening)
  • Smooth transition from belly to neck (no abrupt shoulder)
  • Even wall thickness throughout

Strategy

  1. Throw a wide cylinder first
  2. Belly out the lower section (push from inside)
  3. Collar the upper section gradually
  4. Refine the transition: it should flow, not kink

The difficulty

Collaring wants to make the walls thick and wrinkled. You need to thin and smooth as you narrow. This often takes several careful passes.

If the neck starts wobbling, slow the wheel and gentle it back to center.
