Preparing Your Clay · Why We Wedge

Medium

Wedge two different clays together

Take 250 g of one clay body and 250 g of another (different color works best as a visual indicator).

Stack them together and wedge until the cross-section shows a completely uniform color: no marbling, no swirls, no streaks.

Why this matters

This teaches you to feel when the clay is truly homogeneous. In real studio life, you'll mix scraps of different batches and need to know when the blend is ready.

Tips

  • Start slow: rushing creates air pockets
  • Slice and check every 20 strokes
  • It usually takes 60–80 strokes for full integration
