Carving on a curved surface is significantly harder than on a straight cylinder. The tool angle changes constantly.

Carve a repeating geometric pattern (triangles, diamonds, or crosshatch) on the exterior of a leather-hard bowl.

What makes this hard

• The curvature changes your tool angle at every point
• Maintaining even line depth on a curve requires constant adjustment
• Spacing must account for the shape (lines converge toward the base)

Tips

• Sketch the pattern on paper first
• Mark key reference points on the bowl before carving
• Work in sections: finish one area completely before moving to the next
• Rotate the bowl frequently to check consistency from all angles
