Facet a mug body
Faceting changes the geometry of a round form. Instead of a smooth circle, you get flat planes that catch light differently.
Steps
- Take a leather-hard mug body
- Using a trimming knife or taut wire, cut flat facets around the exterior
- Aim for six to eight facets
- Each facet should be flat, clean, and roughly the same size
The key
Commit to each cut. One confident slice is better than several tentative ones. The clay should release a clean, flat plane.
Assessment
Hold the mug and rotate it slowly. Each facet should:
- Be flat (not concave or convex)
- Transition cleanly to the next facet
- Leave the walls at a safe thickness (don't cut through!)
A well-faceted mug feels designed: geometric but warm.
