Create a wax resist pattern

Wax isn't just for feet: it's a powerful decorative tool. Wherever you paint wax, the glaze can't stick.

The exercise

1. Paint a wax resist design on the exterior of a bisque pot: try stripes, dots, a simple leaf motif, or geometric shapes
2. Let the wax dry completely
3. Dip or brush glaze over the entire surface (including the waxed areas)
4. The waxed areas repel the glaze, revealing the bare clay or a different underglaze beneath

Design tips

• Simple, bold shapes work best for your first attempt
• Use a firm brush for clean edges
• Remember: wax marks are permanent until firing burns them off. Plan carefully.

After firing

The unwaxed areas show glaze. The waxed areas show bare clay (or whatever's underneath). The contrast can be stunning.
