Glazing 101 · Dipping with Tongs

Easy

Dip a test cylinder (2-second count)

Dipping is the gold standard for even glaze coverage. One smooth motion, consistent results.

Steps

  1. Stir your glaze bucket thoroughly (sediment settles!)
  2. Grip a waxed-foot bisque cylinder with tongs at the foot ring
  3. Lower into the glaze at a slight angle (prevents air trapping inside)
  4. Submerge fully, count "one-Mississippi, two-Mississippi"
  5. Remove in one smooth upward motion, no pausing!
  6. Tip out any pooled glaze from inside
  7. Set down and inspect

Check for

  • Even coverage (no bare spots)
  • No tide marks (caused by pausing during removal)
  • No tong marks on the glazed surface (they should only touch the waxed foot)

If you see bare patches, the pot probably had dust on it. Wipe bisque pots before dipping.
