Inspect bisqueware for defects

Unloading day is exciting, but don't rush to glaze. Inspect first.

The inspection protocol

For each piece coming out of the kiln:

1. Visual scan: cracks, chips, blowouts, warping?
2. Tap test: hold the piece by the rim and tap gently with a fingernail. A clear ring = intact. A dull thud = possible crack.
3. Check the base: any cracks radiating from the center? (S-cracks from poor floor compression)

Sort into piles

• Pass: ready for glazing
• Cosmetic issues: small chips or rough spots that can be sanded
• Structural fails: cracks, blowouts. Learn from these, then recycle

For each fail, ask:

• Was it dried too fast? (explosion or crack)
• Was the floor too thick or uncompressed? (S-crack)
• Did pieces lean or fall? (loading problem)

Every failure teaches something. Keep a log.
