Pull and curve a handle in one motion
The advanced method: pull the handle directly from the mug body (already attached at the top) and shape the curve as it hangs.
Steps
- Score and slip the top attachment point on a leather-hard mug
- Press a thick clay carrot onto the spot and blend the join
- Wet your hand and pull the handle downward in smooth strokes
- Let it hang and curve naturally under gravity
- When it firms slightly (10–15 minutes), attach the bottom
The tricky part
The handle must arc naturally, with no kinking or awkward bends. Gravity is your friend here; let it shape the curve while the clay is still soft.
Success criteria
- Smooth, natural arc
- No kink at either attachment point
- The handle springs back slightly when you press it (not floppy, not stiff)
