Roll an even slab

Slabs are the foundation of so many forms, but only if they're actually even.

Roll out a slab approximately 6 mm thick using guide sticks (wooden dowels or yardsticks on either side of the clay).

Check your work

• Poke a needle tool through in 5–6 random spots
• Measure the thickness at each spot
• Variation should be less than 1 mm across the whole slab

Common problems

• Thick center: you're only rolling the edges. Roll from center outward.
• Thin edges: you're rolling past the clay. Stop at the edges.
• Sticking: flip the slab and rotate 90° between rolls.
