Shaping & Forming · Using Ribs

Easy

Shape a bowl with a wooden rib

Ribs are an extension of your hand, but smoother, firmer, and more intentional.

Throw a bowl from 400 g and refine the interior curve using a wooden rib.

What the rib does

  • Removes finger grooves from the interior
  • Creates a smooth, consistent curve
  • Compresses the surface (helps prevent cracking)

Technique

  • Hold the rib flat against the interior wall
  • Let the wheel do the smoothing: light, steady pressure
  • Move from bottom to rim in one pass

Compare

Throw one bowl with rib, one without. The difference is immediately visible and tangible. The ribbed bowl is smoother and more intentional.
