Shape a pouring lip on a cylinder
The simplest spout is a pulled lip, formed directly from the rim of the pot while it's still soft.
Steps
- Take a freshly thrown cylinder (still soft on the wheel)
- Wet your finger and thumb
- Gently pinch and pull a V-shaped channel from the rim
- Shape it into a defined pouring point
The water test
When the pot is bone dry or bisqued, pour water from it. A good spout:
- Channels water into a clean stream
- Doesn't dribble down the side of the pot
- Cuts off cleanly when you stop pouring
The secret
The spout needs a sharp edge at the pouring point. A rounded lip will always dribble. Pinch it to a fine edge.
