Throw a matching set of six off the hump

Production throwing is about consistency. Six matching tea bowls from one hump.

Setup

3 kg of well-wedged clay, centered as a tall cone.

The challenge

• Six tea bowls, all roughly the same:
  • Height (use a gauge or ruler)
  • Width at the rim
  • Wall thickness
• The last bowl should match the first

Use calipers

Measure the first bowl. Match subsequent ones to those numbers. Even 2–3 mm of variation is visible in a set.

The real test

Line up all six. If someone else can't tell which was first and which was last, you've got production-level consistency.

Selling a set of 6 matching cups at a craft market is one of the most reliable ways to generate income as a potter.
