Throw three cups off the hump
One mound. Multiple pots. No re-centering between pieces. This is how production potters work.
Setup
Center a 2 kg hump of well-wedged clay into a tall cone shape on the wheel.
The process
- Center just the top portion of the hump (isolate it with your fingers)
- Open and throw a small cup (~8 cm tall) from that top section
- Cut it off with a wire tool, lift away
- Re-center the top of the remaining hump
- Repeat for two more cups
The key skill
Keeping the hump centered between pieces. If the hump starts wobbling, everything after that wobbles too.
What you're building
Efficiency and rhythm. By the third cup, the motion should feel almost automatic.
