Shaping & Forming · Throwing a Bowl

Medium

Throw a medium bowl (500 g)

Scaling up. 500 g gives you a real bowl, something you could eat cereal out of.

Targets

  • 14–16 cm wide at the rim
  • Even wall thickness (no thick rim, no heavy floor)
  • Open curve that feels generous, not pinched
  • The bowl should feel light for its size when you pick it up later

Common problem at this size

Heavy floor. Use a rib to compress and thin the floor after opening. You want clay in the walls, not sitting as dead weight in the base.

Pro tip

Use a wooden rib on the outside to define the curve. It gives a cleaner, more intentional shape than fingers alone.
