Trim a foot ring on a bowl

Bowl foot rings serve double duty: they look beautiful and they prevent the bowl from sliding on the table.

Key differences from cylinder feet

• Bowl feet are typically wider (the bowl needs a stable platform)
• The interior is often more visible (people flip bowls over more than mugs)
• Proportions matter more: a small foot on a wide bowl looks precarious

Specifications

• Foot diameter: about two-thirds of the bowl base width
• The bowl should sit perfectly flat and stable after trimming
• No wobble when you push the rim lightly

The stability test

Put the trimmed bowl on a flat surface. Press one side of the rim. If it rocks or spins, the foot isn't flat. True it up with one more light pass.
