Brush three even coats on a test tile

Brush-on glazes require multiple coats and careful technique to avoid streaks. It's like painting a wall, but the stakes are higher.

Steps

1. Load a wide, soft brush generously with glaze
2. Apply the first coat in horizontal strokes
3. Let it dry to the touch (just a few minutes)
4. Apply the second coat in vertical strokes (perpendicular to the first)
5. Dry again
6. Apply the third coat in horizontal strokes again

Why alternate direction?

Each coat fills in the thin spots from the previous one. Alternating gives you the most even coverage.

Success criteria

• Even color across the entire tile after firing
• No visible brush strokes in the fired surface
• No bare spots or thin edges

If you see brush marks after firing

You probably didn't load enough glaze on the brush, or you went over partially-dried areas. More glaze, fewer passes.
