Dip four cylinders for thickness comparison

Build your intuition for how dip time affects glaze thickness. This is the kind of test that makes you a confident glazer.

The experiment

Dip four identical bisque cylinders in the same glaze:

• Cylinder 1: 1 second
• Cylinder 2: 2 seconds
• Cylinder 3: 3 seconds
• Cylinder 4: 4 seconds

Label each clearly (mark the bare foot with a pencil).

After firing, compare

• Thickness: thin → thick (you can see and feel the difference)
• Color intensity: does it deepen with thickness?
• Surface quality: does the thickest one run or crawl?
• Maturity: is the thinnest one underfired / matte?
