Shaping & Forming · Throwing a Flat Plate

Medium

Throw a small plate (500 g)

Plates are deceptively hard. All that flat surface loves to crack (S-cracks) and warp.

From 500 g on a bat, open wide and flatten into a plate:

Specifications

  • About 16 cm diameter
  • Even floor: compress compress compress with a rib
  • Slight upturn at the rim (so food doesn't slide off)

The S-crack prevention protocol

  • Compress the floor with a rib in both directions
  • Don't leave the center thicker than the edges
  • Use a wooden rib and press firmly while the wheel spins

After throwing

Leave the plate on the bat. Don't try to wire it off; it will warp immediately. Let it firm up first.
