How to Build a Studio Glaze Library Members Actually Use
A shared glaze shelf can be a gift to members or a mess. The difference is trust. If the label says "celadon" and the result looks different from the sample, members stop using the library and start asking you.
A good library is built on three things: honest test tiles, consistent labels and a record of every batch.
Start with test tiles
Every glaze in the library needs a tile fired on the same clay, in the same kiln atmosphere and at the same cone as your members' work. See why test tiles are non-negotiable and how to read a test tile.
- Show the glaze on every clay body you stock.
- Show one, two and three coats, if the result changes.
- Show it over and under other glazes if you allow layering.
- Note any faults, such as running, crawling or pinholes.
Our guide to glaze test tiles explains how to make them.
Build a glaze board
Mount the tiles on a board near the glaze shelf.
- Hang tiles in a set order, the same as the buckets.
- Print or write a label under each: name, cone, clay, application and thickness.
- Photograph the board and keep the picture on file.
- Replace tiles that no longer match the current batch.
Label every bucket
Use the same layout on every bucket.
| Field | Example |
|---|---|
| Name | Clear gloss |
| Cone range | 6 |
| Application | Dip 3 seconds, or brush three coats |
| Batch date | |
| Mixed by | |
| Notes | Stir well before use |
Put the label on the bucket and the lid.
Keep a mixing record
Record each batch: date, who mixed it, weights and any changes to the recipe. If a batch looks different, you can trace what changed. See weighing and mixing a glaze batch.
Set the rules
- Stir before use, and close the lid.
- Use a clean brush or tool.
- Never pour glaze back into the bucket.
- Report empty or odd-looking glaze.
- New glazes join the library only after a test tile.
Retire glazes that disappoint
A smaller library you trust beats a long one nobody trusts. Review the board each year and retire glazes that fail or are rarely used.
